Farm News

After a day that included CSA harvest and wash as well as bulk picking 500 lbs of turnips in the gusty wind and cold, I was looking forward to working on the blog. I traded my dirty stiff farm clothes for my comfy indoor sweats and slippers and started in on it. After writing the harvest list however, I realized I had meant for us to harvest both Tuesday and Thursday CSA’s fennel today. That’s because we will experience a freeze tonight which is harsher than a frost. Certain crops that can handle a frost might not fair so well in a freeze. Fennel is one such crop. So I grabbed a head lamp (ya know the whole getting dark at 7 thing) put the farm clothes back on (all 100 layers) and picked another 120 fennel plants. Just to be safe. I will take a peak at the few remaining plants in the field tomorrow just to assess its tolerance for cold weather. Generally we always like to play it safe when it comes to potential killing weather and fennel has always been in the more tender category in our minds.

My last minute panic pick of fennel

This story pretty much represents a typical day on the farm! We’ll have a plan for the day but there are always hiccups or detours (on Friday, as another example, the hydraulic pump on our still under warranty tractor broke while Ben was making our garlic beds!!). I’m honestly not even sure what I was planning to write about this week!

Recipes

Roasted Beets and Fennel Vinaigrette

Kale and Turnip Gratin (one bunch curly kale plus turnips greens can sub for the tuscan kale)

Spaghetti Squash with Kale and Sausage (spinach, turnips greens, kohlrabi greens would also work as a green in this recipe)

Warm Kohlrabi and Spinach Salad

Coming Up Next Week (our best guess…) Japanese Sweet Potatoes, Kohlrabi, Garlic, Braising Mix, Potatoes, Napa Cabbage, Carrots, Radishes and more!
